When is the right time to plant the flower bulbs?
Timely planning for the so-called driving of flower bulbs is important. Should the flowers already around Christmas around or open in January, the culture must already in early October begin. For a flower in February is planted around mid-October, for a still later flowering in November is enough for planting.
Flower bulbs need cold and dark to grow
While most plants react to heat and light, onions need cold and dark to get a growth impulse. In the process of pushing through the normal hibernation of the plants is broken by a few simple tricks and thus the natural flowering time advanced by several weeks.
Drainage layer protects against waterlogging
Flower bulbs do not tolerate waterlogging. Therefore, the onions or tubers should be planted in a shallow dish or a spacious pot with drainage holes. In the lower part of a drainage layer Chippings, fine gravel or clay pot shards and then fill the vessel about halfway with substrate. Well suited is mixed with sand flower or garden soil (one part sand on two parts earth).
The right planting depth for flower bulbs
Place large onions, such as daffodils or hyacinths, with their tips up close to the substrate and fill with soil until they are half to two thirds thick. For smaller onions, such as blue oysters or snowdrops, fill the plant container with substrate almost to the brim. The onions are inserted at a small distance one to two centimeters deep.
Plant pots in the basement or outside store
In order to simulate winter conditions in the plants, water the planted containers well and first place them cool and dark. They can be stored, for example, in the cold cellar or buried in the garden in a sheltered, shady spot in the ground. Outdoors, cover the planters with a spruce sprig and make sure that they get as little rain as possible.
Time for budding after about three months

After about three months, then the actual driving can begin. The vessels are brought to the light and into the heat. The temperature may only be increased gradually, otherwise it may lead to growth disorders. Initially, the bulbs and tubers should be placed at no more than ten to twelve degrees. Only after one to two weeks, when the shoot tips have already developed vigorously, the temperature can continue to rise.
With increasing temperatures, the flowers have to be watered: at first only sparingly, with increasing heat stronger. They do not need fertilizer at this time. After a short time the flower buds push themselves upwards. The flowering time lasts the longer, the cooler the plants are.
Specially prepared lilies can be planted all year round
Lilies can be driven throughout the year. As a rule, however, success is only achieved with prepared, previously cooled onions, which are offered commercially. They are placed deep in high-walled planters: at least twice as deep as they are high. For growing temperatures between 12 to 15 degrees are particularly favorable for the flower bud. Only Osterlilie and Prachtlilie tolerate about 18 degrees a little more heat. The soil should always be slightly damp evenly. Prepared onions do not require refrigeration for several months.
What to do after flowering?
When the flowers have withered, cut them off and cultivate the bulbs or tubers in a not too warm place. Now you should mix the dewater sparingly dosed fertilizer, so that the storage organs can regenerate. Once the leaves turn yellow, remove the onions from the siphon and store until autumn or plant in the garden. Once driven flower bulbs should better not be used again in the next year to drive, as the driving costs the onions extraordinary strength.
Drive hyacinths in special glasses
The Hyazinthentreiberei has become fashionable in special glasses. In the bowl-shaped opening of the siphon, put specially prepared onions, which are available on the market, and fill up so much water that it reaches just below the bottom of the onion.
